Who to tell when you change address, besides the registry office
The registry office tells some bodies for you, but not your bank, insurer, employer or online shops. How to build the list and keep your post.

You have registered your change of residence, and for a few weeks everything seems fine. Then a letter from the bank turns up at the old flat, a parcel goes back to the sender, and you realise that only the council knows your new address. The problem is not forgetting one form. It is that nobody gives you a list of who has your address, so you have to put that list together yourself.
The good news is that the registry office (anagrafe) does part of the work. What follows is based on the pages of the Comune di Milano and Poste Italiane, checked on 28 October 2026.
What the registry office does for you
Once your residence declaration is registered, in Milan it is the registry office that informs four bodies: INPS (the social security institute), the Agenzia delle Entrate (the tax agency), ATS, which is the health agency, and the Motorizzazione (the vehicle and licensing office). It also tells other council services, such as education services. The source is the Comune di Milano's answer to the question "Who is the change of residence passed on to?", in the help centre for its online services.
So you do not need to write to these offices: the form you have already sent takes care of it. Outside Milan, it is worth reading the exact list on your own council's website. The deadlines and steps of the declaration are in the article on changing your residence after a move.
Nobody tells anyone else. That means the companies and people you have a contract with, and there are nearly always more of them than you can think of.
Who the registry office does not tell
These are the most common cases. For each one, open the contract or your online account and check which address is written there.
- Bank and cards. Paper statements, new cards and registered letters go to the address the bank has on file. You can usually change it in the app or in online banking, under your personal details.
- Insurance. A home insurance policy names the property it covers: once you move, that address is no longer yours. For a car or motorbike it is also worth asking your insurer what changes with the new address, before the renewal date and not after.
- Your employer. The HR office has your address on your staff record, and the council does not tell them. Write to them yourself, with the date it applies from.
- Electricity, gas and internet. Changing the address is not enough here: the new home needs a contract, and the old one needs closing. How to choose between voltura and subentro is explained in the article on electricity and gas when you move, and for broadband there is the one on moving your internet line to your new home.
- Online shops and deliveries. Every site where you have bought something keeps a saved address, often as the default. Your first order after the move goes to the old flat unless you change it first.
- Subscriptions. Magazines, the gym, clubs, the vet: anyone who sends you something by post or writes to remind you.
Post that still goes to the old address
Even with a good list, something slips through. That is what Seguimi is for: the Poste Italiane service that forwards post sent to your old address on to the new one.
You choose three, six or twelve months. You can have all your post forwarded, or only the items that need a signature, such as registered letters. One request covers the whole family.
Two things to know before you rely on it:
- Timing. If you apply online, the service starts fifteen days after the request. At a post office it starts within five working days. So apply before the move, not the day after.
- What it leaves out. Court documents, tax demands (cartelle esattoriali) and almost all parcels are not forwarded. For those, what counts is the address you gave yourself, which is why you still need the list above.
You will find the price on the service page of the Poste Italiane website.
How to build the list without leaving anyone out
Memory is not enough: you will not remember someone who writes to you once a year. You need three sources you already have at home.
- Payments from your account. Go through your bank statements for the last twelve months. Each direct debit is a company that has a contract with you, and nearly always your address.
- A year of post. The envelopes you keep in a drawer show who has written to you. While you clear the flat, put them aside instead of throwing them away: they are the list already.
- Your inbox. Search for the words "invoice", "order" and "shipping". The online shops and services you had forgotten will turn up.
Then split the list in two. Those to tell before the move, because they send you something important: bank, insurer, employer, household contracts. And those that can wait until your first week in the new place.
During the weeks of a move you have two addresses at once, and that is where the confusion starts. The same goes for the boxes: Cangubox can be delivered to your old home and collected directly from the new one, within the area we serve. The kit shows what the rental includes.
When you have finished, keep the list. In the months after, it shows you who is still writing to the old flat, and for your next move it is already done.
